The Vistas you will see:

Waiotemarama Gorge. WekaWeka Valley, Waimamaku. Waipoua Forest.

There are heaps of gravel roads/tracks linking Opononi to the outlying settlements of Waipoua Forest, Waimamaku, WekaWeka,Waiotemarama, Pakanae, Omapere, Koutu.

Waiotemarama Gorge in Pakanae, a small settlement next to Opononi, provides an amazing waterfall vista filled ride through what was once a major bullock track used to haul giant Kauri from the forest. The road links to D.O.C tracks at the Waimamaku end of the Waiotemarama Gorge.

If you're an explorer type, the WekaWeka Valley, further along State Highway 12 from the Waimamaku end of the Gorge, provides an awesome gravel ride through the remnants of 1970s Hippie Communes, the scenes of many a "Love In" and Marijuana Haze!

Check out the local Waimamaku waterhole located along the river bank of WekaWeka Valley Road, Waimamaku, for a refreshing dip in crisp, pristine mountain water.

There is a D.O.C track at the top, no exit end of the Wekaweka Valley Road which was once the main Highway for horse drawn stage coaches, the earliest forms of Colonial transport.

On your journey up the Road you will see some lovely old examples of Kiwi homesteads, some dating back to the British Colonial settlement period of the 1800s.

Waipoua Forest and the Giant Kauri Tree 'Tane Mahuta' is approximately a 20 k.m journey via Waiotemarama Gorge Rd, Pakanae, Opononi.  There is a mix of hill climbs, flats and downhills along gravel and sealed roads on State Highway 12.

It is definitely worthwhile to take the return trip back from the Waipoua Forest, sticking to the main highway, State Highway 12, and taking in the settlements of Waimamaku, Waimamaku Beach, Omapere, Opononi, & returning to Pakanae.

You will see some awesome views and get the chance to sample food and drinks along the way.
